The mission of the Washburn University
Department
of
Art is to provide students with a
strong foundation
based
on mastering basic concepts
of
art, design, art history
and criticism, as well as learning the technical skills
necessary to make art in a changing world. This founda-
tion is complemented by providing opportunities to see
the best of historical and contemporary original art,
interact with artists, and increase global awareness of
the art experience. Working towards these goals challenges students to express human values through the creation of art, and to think, speak, and write critically about art. The Art Department
serves those intending to prepare for a profession in the Arts (BFA
degrees), those students seeking a Liberal Arts education focused in the
visual arts (BA degrees), as well as non-majors who seek knowledge of
the visual arts. Studio and art history courses are open to anyone with
proper rerequisites. Faculty maintain active professional careers as
content for teaching and are exemplars of life-long learning in the
visual arts.

We have been accredited by the
National Association of Schools of Art and
Design since 1994. Accreditation
signifies that we meet national standards with regard to:

Our studios are housed in the Art Building, located on the south side of campus. We hold art history classes in the Garvey Art Center, which also houses the The Mulvane Art Museum.
Frequent exhibitions and the
museum's permanent collection complement Washburn's art program.
The Museum Director, Assistant Director and Education Coordinator
are members of the art department faculty.
Art study-travel opportunities are offered annually. International courses for art students have included France, Italy and Mexico. We plan a study trip to Greece for Summer 2008. The department plans regional trips to museums and exhibitions, and brings guest artists to Washburn's campus.
The Washburn Art Students Association
(WASA) sponsors
trips, workshops, exhibitions and guest artists. Fund raising events,
like the annual Chili Bowl sale, supplement departmental activities.
Student Scholarships are awarded yearly. Approximately
twenty scholarships go to new and returning students. Deadline for
application is February 15, although some monies are awarded
during final fall enrollment. Work Study, studio
assistant positions and internships are also available. Contact Glenda

Catron Visiting Professor of Art: full-time teaching position with a special focus on developing innovative programming, and interdisciplinary courses and outreach initiatives.

Our B.A.
in Studio Art is considered
a basic liberal arts degree, easily combined with other degree
programs in the college for purposes of obtaining a double major.
The B.A. in Art History is structured for the
non-studio artist interested in museum studies and/or advanced
degree work in Art History. The B.F.A. is our professional degree program for students interested
in a career in Art and advancement into graduate programs in art.
The B.F.A. with Teacher Licensure is
similar to the B.F.A. and includes P-12 teacher licensure.
Our B.F.A. with Emphasis in Art History includes 30 hours of Art History coursework to prepare students for the fields of Museum work or higher education.
— Minor in Art
A minor in art consists of 18 hours of art courses. For an Art Studio minor the following courses are required: AR 101,102, or 103; AR 120 or 140; 12 hours art studio electives, including 6 hours upper division. For a minor in Art History the following courses are required: AR 101, 102, and 142, 9 hours of upper division art history electives.
