This restored barn was built by Seth Hays, first white settler in the Council Grove, Kansas, area.
The town of Council Grove developed as a stop along the
Santa Fe Trail
. Council Oak, the trunk of which still stands in the city park, was meeting spot of Plains Indian tribes. The Kansa Indian Mission, operated 1851-1854, is now State Historic Site.
