This restored barn was built by Seth Hays, first white settler in the Council Grove, Kansas, area.
The town of Council Grove developed as a stop along the
Santa Fe Trail. Council Oak, the trunk of which still stands in the city park, was meeting spot of Plains Indian tribes. The Kansa Indian Mission, operated 1851-1854, is now State Historic Site.
