Word is out that Chris Martin, son of Randall and Susan Martin of Manhattan, got home from Switzerland in time to celebrate Christmas with his family. Chris spent time late summer working on the Large Hadron Collider, then attended school in Geneva in fall semester 2008. Welcome home, Chris! 12/30/2008
Our cousin, Connie Lay , passed away this morning (Sunday, Nov. 30) at Midland Hospice in Topeka, where she had been staying for the past several weeks. Connie's first great-grandbaby, a girl, has arrived and Connie got to meet her recently. Connie had been sending her family her love...something she never ran low on, no matter how ill she became. (She had been diagnosed with cancer in 2004.) Our thoughts are with Connie's husband, Bill, and daughters, Diane, Lori, Angie, and their families. Connie's obituary is available on-line from the Jefferson Co. News. 11/30/2008

The Martin family has several sets of twins (and a set of triplets!) growing up right now. Many of them were at the 2008 Martin Reunion and can be seen in photos of that event. Don Martin's granddaughters were not able to attend, so I asked about them and Don sent these photos (which I think he took!). The twins, Ella and Erin are now six. Their parents are James and Debbie Martin. Photos were taken 3/28/2008.

Chris leaves tomorrow to attend school at Full Sail in Winter Park, FL. His major will be computer animation....I can hardly believe he is old enough to go away!! We have all the faith in the world that he will do great there. 6/29/2008
from Randall and Susan Martin
Chris leaves Sunday, June 1, for Switzerland for seven months, if his Mom can stand it that long.
He will go first to CERN for the summer, near Geneva. They have been building what is called a Large Hadron Collider there, which is a huge project to smash together atoms and try to find new atomic particles. The project has been under construction for many years and is supposed to start operating this summer. There will be about 5,000 science people from all over the world there over the summer. KU awarded Chris a competitive grant for him to go and work there, and he will be the only undergraduate form Kansas there. He has been involved with software and hardware for the project, both in his part time job at KU during this last school year, and in his summer job last summer at K-State. If they find the things they are experimenting for, it will make news beyond the science world.
(Grandpa Bob has been reading up on it and can probably explain it better than me. My guess would be that if they have trouble get the thing up and running they can send him, Uncle Jack, some pliers, a two-pound sledge, a can of WD40, and some hydraulic belts and they'll get the thing running .)
When the Fall semester starts Chris will relocate to Zurich to spend one semester at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, which is one of the Top 25 universities in the world. They are well known for Physics faculty.
He will be taking Physics courses but no Math, as Math classes are taught only in German. He returns to Kansas sometime after Christmas, and will go to KU second semester as a Junior and continue his studies for Math and Physics degrees.
He has quite an itinerary of weekend touring plans while he is in Europe, and is quite excited to be going from both a science and cultural point of view.
--Bon Voyage, Chris!
[P.S. Dick Martin's daughter, Stacey, attended school in Switerland in the year after she graduated from high school in Kansas City, in the late 1990s if I recall correctly. --CY] 5/27/2008

We finally got senior photos for Kellie...none too early since graduation is in 3 weeks! We weren't able to send out many announcements since Kellie and Chris ended up sharing the few that he ordered. Would you be willing to put the scanned photos I am sending on the web site? Chris is graduating from Derby High School and Kellie from Derby Alternative High School on May 18th.
Chris will be leaving for Florida the end of May to attend school at Full Sail in Winter Park, FL. His major will be computer animation.
Kellie will begin her post high school education by attending Cowley County Community College. Her idea is to get an early childhood education degree.
I can hardly believe we wouldn't have anyone in high school next year...wow! 5/3/2008

Lida Wilson's mom, Marie, visited in Topeka for a month, mid-March to mid-April, and had some quality time getting to know her new grandson, Kalvin, born early in 2008. This was her third visit to the States from Czechoslovakia. We're eagerly awaiting the arrival of our third grandbaby, son of Jason and Angela, to be named Carson Michael, and due May 3rd. We'll see... 4/30/2008
about Bob Martin
Bob has had successful cataract surgery on both eyes and now prefers to golf without using his glasses, although he still needs glasses to read. He and Donna have been visiting her sister in Florida, visiting Roger's family in Virginia, and just got back from birthday celebrating in Colorado with grandson Robbie, his wife Rhonda, and new great granddaughter Maya Rose. 4/30/2008

Yes, it's official --- my age is now higher than my IQ. I turned 60 years of age at 7:32 p.m. on April 2nd. It was a pretty uneventful day, although I did hear from lots of friends and family that day, which in and of itself, made it a great day. My best friend, Dennis, asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I told him I wanted to see the Dallas Mavericks to beat the Golden State Warriors by 20 points. I went to the game, and the Mavericks won by 25! which was the ultimate birthday gift at the end of the day.I hope we're all around to celebrate our birthdays for another 60 years! 4/12/2008
We had a visit last Sunday from our "triplicates" (as Dad calls them). They are 18 months old and Julia, the last holdout, is now walking. Julia, Sam, and Sophia came with Mom Laney, visiting us with Topeka family: Grandma Sherry, Grandpa Alex, and Uncle Josh. 4/7/2008
about the Sooters
Roberta came to Topeka and visited her brother, Jack, in early March. [Brother Bob was away that weekend.] She traveled with son David, wife Vivian, and granddaughter Julie -- who was competing as a sophomore with Bishop Carroll High School in state girls basketball championship games. Winning games all weekend, Carroll lost to
Bishop Miege High School of Roeland Park in the final round. Julie is likely to be back at future championship games in future years.
Family reports that Roberta stays active in community activities and events from her new retirement home. The sale of her home, built by her family in the early 1950s, is nearly final. 3/30/2008

Tom is still with Spirit AeroSystems (formerly Boeing) and I'm still receptionist in the Administrative office for the local high school. Brian, 21, is attending Wichita State University, majoring in Sports Administration. He also works full time for Best Buy and is a Geek Squad Home Theater Installation expert. Chris is a senior in high school and plans to attending Full Sail University in Florida next fall, majoring in Computer Animation. Kellie is a junior and just announces that she wants to be a teacher. Wow! She will graduate from high school mid-term, in December 2008. She intends to take a college class spring semester to get an early start. 1/6/2008

We're keeping busy with all three girls (Laura, Julie and Alisa) in high school this year. Laura will be graduating this spring. My brother Ned heads for boot camp in January as he joins the Army as a chaplain, committing for the next three years. Say a prayer for him -- he's no youngster. 1/6/2008

The Roberts family spent the weekend at Mom's with Mark's and David's families. This is her last weekend to be home. She is planning on moving into Vintage House on Sat. She seems so ready to move, and is making it perfectly clear to all of us that she will be relieved to be there. We had fun sorting through photos and memorabilia with her. She couldn't see the photos but we would describe some of them and she would tell us stories. It was a great weekend! 1/3/2008
