from Missouri relative Terry Wright—
Thank you for asking about my Aunt Shirley [Jones]. She fell a couple of days ago and broke her hip. She is in the hospital having successfully completed hip surgery to fix the break. She is expected to be in ICU for a couple of days and then the doctors will reassess her then. 12/26/2011
from John Sooter—
I've got a job now (basically the first regularly paid one in my life, except for the bit of English teaching in Rio last year). I am working 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, so it doesn't leave much time for anything else. It's a company called Golden Gate that handles all the shuttles for Enterprise car rental.
Now we might just get by, as the good Lord has always done for us.
I'm keeping up with our electronic store in Brazil too (www.kiddyviddy.com) as a way to keep up with our missionary work in Brazil and help parents to acquire material for the character formation side of their kids' upbringing.
Edwin and Carol have our address. If any family is coming this way we'd sure be happy for a visit, and we also gladly accept phone calls to say "hi". Ha, ha. 12/24/2011
from Ray & Sue Hallauer--
The day after Troy and Dawn were married he had to report bright and early the next morning to Salina with his unit for two weeks training. After that he was home for two weeks and then was activated to Ft Hood, Texas, and is still there. On Oct 19 he was to deploy out but the units flight was cancelled. No room for the unit when they would have reached their destination. Troy came home last weekend for a short four day pass along with six others in his unit to spend time with all their families. No news from his unit as of now. Will keep in touch. Thanks Ray and Sue. 11/13/2011

Ed and Brenda Martin and Carol and Max Yoho had a wonderful vacation, together with Kaw Valley State Bank of Wamego Explorers Club members, in the Canadian Rockies in early October, 2011. We spent two days traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train and another five days traveling by bus. We visited Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper, Athabasca Glacier ice field, Yoho National Park (celebrating their 125th anniversary), Lake Louise, Banff, and Calgary. The group gave Max and Carol the best seats on the bus, and Carol has posted about 820 of her photos in six pages of thumbnails, linked to all 820 photos set up as a slide show on her web site. 10/15/2011

Max Yoho's sixth book of humorous fiction, Me and Aunt Izzy, is now available for sale at Amazon.com, CreateSpace.com, Kansas Originals Market shopping cart, and at various retailers. Details are posted on the Dancing Goat Press web site. Eleven-year-old Jefferson Davis Johnson has been sentenced to a summer of “moral rehabilitation” under the watchful eye of his great aunt, Queen Isabella of Spain Johnson. A relic of the “roaring twenties,” this stern matriarch may have her own ideas about what a boy should learn. 9/15/2011

Ken Wilson and his brother Larry were mentioned prominently in the article "Frito-Lay Topeka celebrates 40 years," in the Topeka Capital-Journal, August 30, 2011. Ken has worked at Frito-Lay since they opened in Topeka. Read Ken's story. 8/31/2011

Stacie and Kate Martin, daughters of Richard Martin, recently vacationed in Thailand where they saw amazing sights and both got to ride on ELEPHANTS. Facebook has a 131-photo slide show, shared by Kate. If you are on Facebook, take a look at "I'm Secretly Thai." [below: Kate is left, Stacie is right.] 7/11/2011
Three additions --
from Carol Yoho --
Our step-grandson, Jeremy Yoho, a Kansas National Guardsman, has been stationed recently in Elwood, KS, along the Missouri River just west of St. Joseph, MO. Ten guardsmen are monitoring levees, currently threated with high water from floods upriver. I attach a link to an interesting Facebook article about current responsibilities of these Guardsmen, with a quote by Jeremy. We're proud of the job Jeremy is doing for his state! [This photo is of Jeremy, with his son, Gideon, was taken upon his return from tour of duty in the Sinai Penninsula in July, 2010.] 6/29/2011
from John Sooter [Brazil] --
I'll be turning 60 on June 18th. Went by fast!! I still feel the same as always inside, till I look at older pictures and then I realize "something" changed - ha!
Denise and I are persuing a dream to move up to the States this year. Her sister is already living in Seattle and is begging us to come. She invites us to stay in her home till we can rent our own place and she also has a job lined up for me. Our oldest daughter is already there too, and we'd like for the boys to have the opportunity to get to know "their" country. It would take a complete miracle if we could make in time for the reunion at the beginning of July, but Denise would love having an opportunity to meet all the family, and she is sad that she never got to meet my mom. 6/19/2011
from David & Katherine Ragland—
Our son Jeremy is in Japan. He is located near Kyoto which is south of the earthquake and nucelar reactor situation. He left the last Sunday in March and will be in Japan for at least one year. He signed a contract and can sign another contract and stay longer. He is teaching EOS to Japanese junior-high-aged youth. He also works some in the office for the company that recruited him to go to Japan. He's been posting his experiences on Facebook. 4/20/2011

|Dad, Jack Martin, has completed his move to Thornton Place Independent Senior Living, near 29th St. and Wanamaker Rd. in Topeka. He is at home in a one-bedroom apartment, with a beautiful view to the southwest from his deck. He enjoys being served three warm

It was a delight to see family members at Max Yoho's "Meet a Kansas Author" event at the Topeka Room of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library on Sunday afternoon, Apr. 3, 2011. He was discussing his newest book, With the Wisdom of Owls. There was standing room only. If you watch video from WIBW-TV you'll see April Boatwright standing with her son, Ty, by an entrance. It was a particular delight to see Leota Fay Martin attending with Phyllis and David Gish. Max's oldest son, Alex, his wife, Sherry, and grandson, Josh, were there also. Thank you all!
ALSO: Max received an "ARTy" Award from the NE Kansas ArtsConnect group. It was one of eleven "ARTy's bestowed at a reception at the Topeka Civix Theatre and Academy, on Thurs. evening, May 4, 2011, for "Distinguished LiteraryArtist." The ArtsConnect Facebook web site candid photos show just how good Max is at making people, including the presentation staff, laugh outloud. 6/1/2011
Don Martin displayed some of his photos on the First Friday Art Walk, Topeka, on Friday evening, April 1, 2011, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2021 S.W. 29th St. Don's work focused around a number of photos he had taken of steam engines running in varies places across the midwest. Other work was Kansas landscapes. Both types are seen in the photo Carol Yoho took during her visit at the event. There was a good crowd, and a number of artists and photographers represented. 4/2/2011

Groshong relative Terry Wright (from the line of heritage from Cleve Sr.'s mother Ann Groshong Martin -- her brother Sylvester Warfield Groshong's clan) writes that his aunt, Shirley Jones , is doing better after a grave illness. (Some Martin's helped Shirley celebrate her 95th birthday in Overland Park, KS, in March 2010.)
We are pleased Shirley is feeling better. 3/15/2011
from Heather Martin --
Matt [McCarty] asked me to marry him in September of this year. Since then we have moved down to Columbus, GA, for Matt's job with the Army. After the move, we started to plan our wedding for May 7, 2011. We are very excited and are enjoying this exciting time in our lives and are enjoying the planning of our big day as well as our future together! We hope to see you there!
—Visit Heather & Matt's wedding. 2/22/2011

I have been so long getting these pictures to you. We had a great trip to the Passion play in September, 2011, and got to see lots of things. [I put Katherine's photos chronologically into Martin 2010 Family News, so here is a link to the Ragland European vacation.] 1/22/2011
from Terry Wright & our Groshong Family link, concerning his Aunt Shirley Jones. (Several Martins went to a 95th birthday party for Shirley in March, 2010, in Overland Park. The party was thrown by her family and you can see photos of the event on our 2010 Martin Family News.)
Shirley is failing fast., Lynn felt today was particularly bad. Her memory is not good and she has fallen several times. She was in the hospital last week as she had fluid around her heart due to congestive heart failure. Someone is staying with her all the time now. They have contacted hospice as they want to keep her in her home but need some help. 1/17/2011
Phyllis Gish sent me a really fun letter written by Aunt Leota when she was in 9th grade. I'll also post this letter on our Martin Family News page. It's about Aunt Leota meeting Shirley Temple back in 1942. The letter is dated 2-2-1942. I attach the letter as a PDF file.
"Carol, I was sorry to hear about Shirley Jones, we enjoyed meeting her at her birthday party and learning of the family connection. Thanks for passing this information on to us.
I have attached a story that my mother, Leota Fay, wrote when she was in the 9th grade. We found it tucked in a diary of hers, and yes she said I could share it. Thought some of the family might enjoy reading it.This is a true story and she says her Uncle assisted by helping her come up with the title. —Phyllis 1/17/2011

John's family spent 2010 in Rio de Janeiro rather than Sal Paulo. John has a new U.S. phone number set up through Denise's family in Seattle. Family may contact Carol Yoho via e-mail to get John's new phone number. He has been working to teach business professionals "English as a Second Language" in two separate part-time jobs, as Brazil prepares to host a World Cup Championship in 2014 and International Olympic Games in 2016. John and Denise still have three sons and a daughter living at home with them: Daniel, Kevin, Jonny, and Ana Clara. 1/7/2011
