BACKGROUND: The name Lambda Pi Eta represents what Aristotle described in his Rhetoric as the three modes of persuasion: Logos meaning logic; Pathos relating to emotion and Ethos defined as character credibility and ethics. Lambda Pi Eta was founded by Dr. Stephen A. Smith in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. The National Communication Association (NCA) established Lambda Pi Eta as the official Communication Honor Society for undergraduate students in 1994. Lambda Pi Eta has been accredited by the Association of College Honor Societies since February 1996.

Purpose:	Requirements for a Student to be Inducted:
1. to recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement	1. completed at least 60 semester credit hours of college course work
2. to stimulate interest in the field of communication	2. earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in college course work
3. to promote and encourage professional development among communication majors	3. completed the equivalent of at least 12 semester credit hours in communication courses
4. to provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication	4. earned a minimum GPA of 3.25 in communication course work
5. to establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students	5. demonstrated commitment to the field of communication and be in good standing
