Associate Professor Roy Sheldon has taught at Washburn since Fall 1983. Dr. Sheldon was born and raised in north central Ohio. He served on active duty as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 and in the Army Reserve from 1970 to 1974. His B.A. ( summa cum laude in English and American Studies) is from Kent State University and his M.A. is from Bowling Green University. He earned his Ph.D. in English at Purdue University, writing his dissertation on D. H. Lawrence’s novels. He taught in the Business Writing Program at Perdue University; before coming to Washburn. He taught one year at Franklin College in Indiana. Courses he has taught include the American Novel, Literary Modernism, Classic English Fiction, Wanders and Exiles in Literature, Introduction to Poetry, Science Fiction, and Fantasy. He also coordinates the Writing center. Dr. Sheldon has presented papers on literature, composition, and science fiction at national and regional conferences. His poetry has appeared in Kansas English, Mension: The Bulletin of Mid-America Mensa, Kansas Quarterly, and Inscape: The Washburn Literary Arts Review. He is faculty advisor for the local chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary society. In 2005, the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University named him as one of seventy-five distinguished alumni on the occasion of the college’s seventy-fifth anniversary. Dr. Sheldon is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the National Scholastic Honorary, and a twenty-plus member of American Mensa, Ltd., for which he serves as a proctor.
