English Department Chair:

Professor Howard Faulkner received his B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. He came to Washburn in 1972 and became chair of the English Department in 2006. He regularly teaches courses in American literature, critical theory, and modern English grammar.

Dr. Faulkner is a three-time Fulbright senior scholar, having spent a year each teaching American literature in Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Morocco. He was also a visiting professor for a year at the university in Metz, France.

In addition to many articles on American and African-American literature, Dr. Faulkner has published six books, three of them co-edited with his colleague Virginia Pruitt on the correspondence of Topeka psychiatrist Karl Menninger. In early 2007, the journal American Imago will devote a complete issue to an article he and Pruitt wrote: “In the Menninger Archives.”
