Desire Bears No Fruit

The flowers of desire, those tokens of love,
            bear no fruit.
Tulip  has
            two lips
Rose   has
            hips
But they are nothing but beauty,
            gesture, impermanence.

Give me flowers that bear fruit:
a small white blossom--
            strawberry
a tiny half moon of white lavender--
            green bean
a pale yellow star--
            tomato
a purple tear, dropping--
            eggplant.

Give me beauty I can taste.
