Hand scattering ashes

Sowing the Pecos Wilderness

--for Jim Goudie

I stood on the porch.
Below me the family
waved to Lion Head
Mountain, each hand
sowing a scattering
of his ashes:

thin sprays of water,
puffs of smoke,
swells of tiny seeds
drifted in mountain
breeze.

We turned then,
each one
wondering
what next
might grow.
