Feng (Sing Xiang) Zhang

Patricia Wakefield interviewed Feng (Sing Xiang) Zhang on April 4, 2006. Feng was born May 17, 1978 in the Guangdong Province of China, near the city of Zhanjiang. He immigrated to the United States with his mother when he twelve. He had family already in the United States when he arrived. Feng's father joined him and him mother about 10 years after Feng's arrival. Feng's mother works at the Chinese Kitchen in Dillons grocery store and Feng's father works at a plastics manufacturing plant. Both speak very little English. Feng speaks Cantonese, which was spoken in his home, as well as English and Mandarin. Feng has lived in Kansas since he immigrated to the United States. He grew up in Topeka and attended college at the University of Kansas. He is married but has no children. His wife, also an immigrant from China, is an architectural engineering student at Kansas University. He proposed to her in Hong Kong and they were married in a civil ceremony in August 2005. He is a naturalized citizen but his wife is not. They currently live in Lawrence , Kansas. Feng works full time for the Kansas Army National Guard as a medical operations special project officer. He enjoys his job and plans on making a career out of the military.
