The Department of Mass Media at Washburn University provides students with a rich variety of applied, critical and theoretical learning experiences. Courses are offered in electronic media, media writing and publishing, public relations and advertising. The department educates media consumers and prepares media specialists for a dynamic, technological, global and multicultural, mediated environment.
Mass media majors pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree and are required to complete a minor. The program prepares students to begin careers in mass media and for graduate education. It takes advantage of the unique learning opportunities and numerous media organizations in the state capital and prepares students who will meet the needs of the corporate, nonprofit, and governmental entities in Topeka and across the state, and the region.
The curriculum is designed to develop students writing, critical thinking, technical, and research skills; to enhance students aesthetic awareness and professionalism; and to motivate students curiosity and desire for continued learning. The mass media program contributes to students general education, as well as to the education of those seeking more specialized instruction in the form of a mass media major or minor.
Through teaching, research, creative activities, and service, mass media faculty strive to continuously improve teaching and advising, to meet community needs, and to contribute to the extension of knowledge. The department is obligated to promote media literacy, freedom of expression and socially responsible communication. |
