| The Major
Majors must complete a total of 40 hours which includes a variety of basic
course requirements, courses in a selected area of emphasis, and elective
offerings chosen in consultation with an adviser.
All majors must complete a 15-22/hour minor. Upon completion of the
minor the student must fill out the appropriate minor form provided by
the registrar's office. Students must submit the list of courses in
the minor to the media adviser prior to completion of the minor.
The list should be signed by a minor adviser and be
retained in the department file for advising purposes. |
| The Minor
The minor in Mass Media consists of 18 credit hours. Students must
complete: MM 100, 202, 300,
and an additional nine hours selected
in consultation with a media adviser. A minor can be developed
in
electronic media, media writing, public relations or a combination
of these areas. |
| Advertising |
The mass media degree with an advertising emphasis prepares students to work either in the creative or the business side of advertising. The curriculum is a combination of mass media and business courses. |

Internship Application Material (Internship Packet)
|
Internships are required of all mass media students. An internship provides the student with experience and training in a professional setting.
The Mass Media Faculty maintains a network of contacts with professionals in radio, TV and cable network companies, newspapers, advertising and public relations agencies and business and professional organizations.
Students receive up to three hours of credit for this work. Internships must be approved by the department chair, in consultation with the Internship Coordinator.
Twenty-four hours of credit in the major must be completed prior to the internship experience. |

Policy On Departmental Honors |
To graduate with honors from the Department of Mass Media, a student must:
1. Attain a grade point average of 3.5 in the major and 3.0 overall.
2. Complete an application for departmental honors at least one full semester
before graduation. The application must be signed by the MM faculty member
who will supervise the honors project.
3. As part of the application the student must submit a proposal for a project
to be carried out as part of a MM class or other relevant department activity.
The project must go beyond the minimum required for a class assignment.
4. The proposed project must be approved by a three-member faculty
committee, which includes the honors project adviser.
5. The finished project must be completed at least three weeks before
graduation and presented to the three-member committee, which must
approve the project and recommend the student for Departmental Honors
to MM faculty.
6. A copy of the project must be filed with the department office. This can be
in the form of a written report, audio or video tape, a series of published
articles, or a planned communication campaign. |

Each year the Washburn University Mass Media Department offers a variety of endowed
scholarships to qualified individuals. If you are interested in applying, you may pick up an
