Welcome
to Washburn University's
Department of Mathematics

Student Jobs Need some extra cash? The tutor lab needs tutors. See Dr. Liang about becoming a tutor, even if you're not a math major! The department receives many phone calls each week from current Washburn students as well as parents in the area who are seeking a private tutor for themselves or their children. Lynn Bailey keeps a list of private tutors - get your name on it today.

We offer numerous scholarships that are awarded annually. These scholarships are renewable for up to three years provided satisfactory progress is made towards a degree in mathematics or a degree with a heavy mathematics emphasis. The Kinzer Scholarship, Laura Z. Greene Scholarship, Richard E. Shermoen, and Terry and Ann McAdam Scholarship are among those offered in the department. We also offer several other scholarships named for their benefactors to outstanding students in each of the three concentrations in mathematics. Please visit the WU scholarship page for more information or stop in and speak to Dr. Charlwood. |

Professional Organizations The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) maintains a list of relevant organizations. This list offers something for each of our math majors, regardless of your track. Joining professional organizations is an important step in becoming a member of mathematics community. Many of them offer student memberships at substantial discounts. Please speak to any of the faculty about these organizations and the benefits of becoming a member! The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has an extensive list of organizations already compiled. Check it out! |
Kappa Mu Epsilon The Kansas Delta Chapter of KME was established at Washburn University on March 29, 1947. Since then, more than 650 students and faculty have become members of the local chapter. Throughout the years, student members of Kansas Delta have regularly prepared mathematics papers and presented them at Regional and National Conventions of KME. In these competitions, Kansas Delta students have done very well. Since 1973, close to 20 papers have been presented. Almost all of these presentations have ranked in the top four of all the papers presented at the respective conventions. |
Putnam Exam The department sponsors a team each December for the MAA's William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. The exam is an annual contest for college students established in 1938 in memory of its namesake. Cash prizes for the top five teams in recent years ranged from $25,000 to $5,000. Recent cash prizes for the top five individuals have been $2,500 each.

WUCSI The Washburn Undergraduate Creative and Scholarly Innovation Grant offers a stipend to support undergraduate research at the university. The fall or spring grant helps students pay for the necessary expenses of conducting research. WUCSI also offers students an opportunity to conduct research over the summer instead of working. The WUCSI grants have supported various research projects conducted by this department's students. Check out the website for more information! |
