The course requirements for a major are fulfilled by selecting one of the following three paths (Pure Mathematics, Secondary Education, or Actuarial Science) listed below. (Note: Transfer students must complete at least nine upper division (300/400 level courses) in mathematics from the Washburn Mathematics and Statistics Department.) Information concerning a minor in mathematics or an Associate of Arts degree in Natural Sciences and Mathematics is also found below.

Statement on Departmental Honors
Department of Mathematics & Statistics

Departmental Honors: In the College of Arts and Sciences, students are eligible to receive departmental honors upon graduation if they fulfill the following requirements: (1) a grade point average of 3.5 in the major,
including a 3.5 in upper-division work in the major; (2) successful completion of a research project or an equivalent deemed suitable by the department; (3) the recommendation of the department.

To qualify for departmental honors in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, a student must meet the GPA requirements as set by the College of Arts & Sciences. For a student taking MA 389, Capstone Experience, the student will receive departmental honors through a vote by the faculty evaluation committee for Capstone projects, or, by giving an additional oral presentation of their work at a venue acceptable to the Department, such as at a convention of Kappa Mu Epsilon.

For a mathematics major not taking MA 389, honors may be granted by the Department for passing at least one of the exams of the Society of Actuaries, or, by completing a project outside of class work and presenting their work orally to the Department, or by presenting it at a venue acceptable to the Department.

The actuarial profession is challenging and rewarding, and positions in the profession are readily available at this time to qualified candidates. The Society of Actuaries is the largest of several organizations that administers professional tests for actuaries. After passing the first battery of tests, the actuary is designated as Associate in the society. A second battery of tests must be passed to receive the designation as Fellow. Our research, which includes discussions with professionals in the field, indicates that a student who has passed at least a portion of the first battery would be very employable. The successful student in our program should be able to pass about 25% of the first battery.
Minor in Mathematics:
Students who exercise the optional minor in mathematics will fulfill the fifteen hour requirement by taking courses numbered MA 151 or above (excluding MA 206 and MA 228). Six of the hours must be at the upper division level.
Associate of Arts in Natural Science and Mathematics:
The general requirements for an Associate of Arts in Natural Science and Mathematics are listed in the catalog. For a field of concentration in mathematics, the twelve required hours are satisfied by Mathematics courses numbered 151 or above (excluding MA 206 and MA 228).
