Math
Day
Math
Day was begun at Washburn in 1969, and is held each year in late October
or early November. About 25 nearby high schools send between 400 and
500 students to take a 40 question competitive mathematics exam, have
lunch, and tour the campus. Students may elect to take a tour of the
Mulvane Art Museum, the Mabee Library and its Electronic Classroom,
or get a demonstration of some of the instruments over in the Chemistry
Department after the hour long exam.
The
teachers who bring groups of students have a special meeting while their
students take the exam to discuss issues of current importance to mathematics
educators.
After
lunch, awards are presented to the top 3 scorers in each of the senior
and non-senior categories, along with team awards for schools in 1A-2A-3A,
4A, and 5A-6A classifications. Ribbons are also given to the top 3 scorers
on the exam from each participating school. |
