|
| We
offer a wide variety of degrees and specializations to fit your needs.
Our programs lead to four-year Bachelor
of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees or to a two-year Associate of
Arts degree. You can specialize in Pure Mathematics, Actuarial Science,
or Secondary Education. We also have one of the leading Pre-Engineering
programs in the state of Kansas. |
We
offer numerous scholarships that are awarded annually to qualified incoming
students. These scholarships are renewable for up to three years provided
satisfactory progress is made towards a degree in mathematics or a degree
with a heavy mathematics emphasis. The Kinzer
Scholarship, Laura
Z. Greene Scholarship, Richard E. Shermoen, and Terry and Ann McAdam
Scholarship are amoung those offered in the department. We also offer
several other scholarships named for their benefactors to outstanding
students in each of the three concentrations in mathematics. Please
visit the WU
scholarship page for more information. |
No
where else will you find more faculty support than in Washburn's math
department. Our professors' primary interest
is encouraging academic excellence while providing the necessary support
for you to succeed. They genuinely care about the students and are readily
available for consultation. They work hard to implement different teaching
methods to help you both learn and understand math concepts. |

| The
department has a tutoring center where you can find help during morning,
afternoon, and evening hours. The Harlan J. Koca
Mathematics Enrichment Program Center is staffed by mathematics
tutors, many of whom are majors in our department. In addition, the
Center also has computer-assisted software available. |
The
math department offers small class sizes taught by experienced professors.
As a math major, you will frequently encounter classes with 15 or less
students. |

Research |
| Washburn
University is committed to incorporating the latest technology on our
campus. All of our student housing offers high speed internet access,
and most of the buildings now have wireless access points, including
the math department. Most of the mathematics classrooms are mediated
and our professors take advantage of the latest version of the computer
algebra system Maple. |
At
Washburn, we are proud of the large number of student activities you
can enjoy. The university makes it easy for you to meet new people and
with the opening of the brand new Student
Recreation and Wellness Center, staying active has never been more
fun! The math department offers two student organizations: Club
Mathematica and Kappa Mu Epsilon. Club Mathematica
is our mathematics club for all interested students which meets at least
once a month. In addition, a national mathematics honor society chapter
of KME has been active since 1947. Induction of highly qualified mathematics
majors occurs annually. Many students work on individual projects and
present their results at regional and national KME meetings. |
Through
KME, classroom experiences, and individual opportunities, our students
have a variety of forums to conduct undergraduate research. Currently,
while Washburn is considered to be a predominantly non-research institution,
students have the rare opportunity to apply to the Washburn
Undergraduate Creative and Scholarly Innovative Grant Program which
funds undergraduate research and summer fellowships. One of our students
was the first recipient of the award and since then, others from our
department have also received the grant. |

some of our graduates say |
||
| "After having taught junior and senior high school for several years, I was asked, with only a few days notice, to be the department chair of the math department as well as teach the upper level courses of trigonometry and calculus. Once again, I found myself relying not only on the math content I learned at Washburn, but also, and just as importantly, on the teaching methods of my professors." Sandy Peer |
"I am very grateful to Washburn University's Mathematics Department because I feel it is the personal attention I received from them that enabled me to be a success in my career today as an actuary. My success can be credited to the faculty who are very friendly and helpful. They wanted to see me succeed. The staff is composed of knowledgeable teachers with good teaching skills. The smaller class size was an asset to my learning experience because of the individual attention I received from the instructors." Karen Richard |
"After attending three major universities, I can say with certainty that the quality of teaching is generally abysmal - with one major exception. The excellent teachers in Washburn's math department combined with the smaller class sizes available at Washburn provide an unparalleled opportunity for a willing student to receive an excellent education." Michael S. Hewett |
