Facilities
The Garvey Fine Arts Center is the hub for the arts in Topeka. This building not only houses the Department of Music, but is also home to the Theater Department, Art Department, and the Mulvane Art Museum. The centerpiece of the Garvey Fine Arts Center is the Elliot Hill White Concert Hall.
Elliot Hill White Concert Hall
White Concert Hall serves as the nucleus for the Arts in Topeka. It is home to all music department concerts, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, Community Concerts Series, Festival Singers, Sunflower Music Festival and countless university and civic events. It is considered to be one of the finest concert halls in the country.
Music Technology Lab
Equipped with 15 Korg full-size electronic keyboards and Macintosh computers the music lab serves as a dual-purpose lab for the instruction of piano and to learn how the world of music has been changed by technology with software programs such as Finale (music notation program) and Band in a Box (automatically generates complete professional quality arrangements of piano, bass, drums, guitar and strings in a wide variety of popular styles).
Listening Lab
The listening lab houses the department’s audio/visual recordings and playback equipment. Students have access to a large library of CD’s, DVD’s, video-cassettes, audio cassettes and LPs. After requesting a recording, students can choose from 21 listening carrels which have individual access to 16 different play-back channels. All recordings are handled only by trained personnel.
Practice Room Suite
The practice room suite has 17 units. There are grand pianos in three units and uprights in 12 of the other units. One unit is reserved for storage and practice of our Lyon & Healy Concert Grand harp. The practice rooms are available to all music students from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily.
Student Lounge Area
Adjacent to the music office, this open area houses two computer stations, relaxed seating, and a vending machine.
Classrooms
The music department has two classrooms and two large rehearsal halls. Each is equipped with a grand piano, audio playback and recording equipment, and data projectors.
