LETTER TO STUDENTS

Dear Student:

Greetings from the Music Education Division of the Washburn University Music Department. We are very excited about our University, music programs, scholarship opportunities, and the music faculty. Listed below is information we believe you should know about us.

The University – Washburn University is a liberal arts university of approximately 7, 400 students, situated in the heart of Topeka, the state capitol. Washburn has been listed among the top ten public universities in the Midwest by US News & World Report. Our beautiful campus houses state-of-the-art facilities including our Living-Learning Center and White Concert Hall, where students have the opportunity to perform in on of the finest concert halls in the nation.

The Music Department – The Washburn University Music Department offers degrees in Music Education, Music Performance, and Bachelor of Arts in Music. The strength of our department lies in the high quality and dedication of our faculty, the talent and enthusiasm of our students, and the size of our department. With approximately 100 Music Majors and almost as many non-music majors participating in our programs, we are large enough to give students the highest quality ensembles while being intimate enough to offer small class sizes and individual attention.

Scholarship Opportunities – The Washburn University Music Department offers one of the best scholarship programs you will find anywhere. In addition to the academic scholarships, the Music Department offers generous scholarships to talented students.

The Music Education Division – The Music Education Division offers students numerous opportunities to learn from faculty who have taught many years in the schools. We take an active interest in helping you learn how to become an excellent instrumental, vocal, or general music teacher. We include a lot of time in the schools throughout our program, not just during student teaching. Many of our students teach lessons in local music stores or assist in the schools. Our chapter of CMENC (Collegiate MENC) is one of the most active in the state and is responsible for the Junior High/Middle School Solo Festival held on our campus every year. They also attend the annual KMEA State In-Service every year and two of our students in recent years have been elected State Vice President for CMENC. The result is our music education students receive practical teaching experience and are involved in activities and organizations that will help them to become great music teachers.

For more information…please feel free to contact me at 785.670.1519 or visit our website at www.washburn.edu. We encourage you to come to campus to meet with our faculty, hear our ensembles, observe our classes, and audition for a music scholarship.

Sincerely,

Dr. Catherine Hunt
Director of Music Education
