Dr. Smith was born and raised in the Boston, Massachusetts area and came to the Midwest to attend graduate school and never left. He has taught college students in Oklahoma, South Dakotra, Nebraska and Missouri before coming to Washburn.
At Washburn University, Dr. Smith is a pre-law advisor. He is a political analyst for several newspapers, radio stations, and television stations on state and local political events. He is also Faculty Advisor and Chapter Counselor of the Sigma Phi
Epsilon Fraternity at Washburn. In recognition of his contributions to the local chapter, the National Fraternity honored him with a Distinguished Alumnus award in 1992.
Students at Washburn selected Dr. Smith ten times as the recipient of the Faculty Certificate of Merit for outstanding teaching. Dr. Smith was also one of the first faculty members honored by the University with a Ned N. Fleming Excellence in
Teaching Award. He also has been selected five times for inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and is listed in Who's Who in America.
