Park Lockwood:
I came back to Kansas from College Park, Maryland and enjoy Washburn University for its cooperative atmosphere and emphasis on growth and development for students and faculty. Working on many committees and collaborating with other departments, I have come to realize that Washburn's faculty and administration work together well and take pride in issues that enhance teamwork and learning. In addition, Washburn's student and faculty-oriented approach fosters a teaching / learning atmosphere with a climate of acceptance, making this University an enjoyable place to work. |

Maria Racheiva-Stover:
I believe that a job decision should be holistic. That’s why choosing Washburn University was not hard although we had no family connections to Kansas. Washburn offers me the opportunity for tenure-track career advancement in a field I am passionate about, collegial atmosphere, abundant funding opportunities for international travel and research, and a truly picturesque urban campus. Topeka also offered my husband a rewarding career in e-learning and allowed our 4-year-old daughter to make lots of good friends. |

Pam MacDonald:
I moved to Topeka from Houston,Texas to begin my career as a tenure track Assistant Professor in 1998. My husband and I now live in Lawrence, KS, which is a short drive from Topeka and from Kansas City, where he works. Lawrence is a lovely college town and a great place to raise a family. The entire greater Topeka area also has a lot to offer as far as cultural activities, without the drawbacks of a bigger city, such as the severe traffic and pollution problems that we faced in Houston.
One of the things that most attracted me to Washburn is the support provided to the newly hired, tenure-track faculty member. When I was hired at Washburn, it was expected that I would earn tenure, and people, both inside and outside of my department, worked with me to help me with every step of the process. When I was preparing to submit my tenure application, I asked all of my colleagues who had successful applications the previous year (across many different disciplines) if I could review their materials. Every single one of them enthusiastically allowed me to view their materials. This cooperative and supportive environment is what makes Washburn such a wonderful place to work.
Washburn is also a very "family friendly" institution. It is a place where I can enjoy both a life with my family and a fulfilling and meaningful career. It just so happens that the tenure years coincide with the childbearing years for most people. I gave birth to my first daughter before I had tenure and turned in my successful tenure petition a month before my second daughter was born. Washburn is an institution where your other obligations are respected and supported, for both male and female faculty.
