ARCHIVE
Joe Orton (1933-1967) achieved recognition, fame and notoriety as one of British drama's most scandalous innovator playwrights. His comedies which include Entertaining Mr. Sloane (1964), Loot (1965) and the posthumously performed What the Butler Saw (1969) are black comedy-stylish and violent. Using the classic forms of farce he mercilessly lampooned the prissy, middle-class values of this society targeting bourgeois society. His witty and savage dialogue, iconoclastic attacks on social conventions and outrageous approach to propriety have often caused critics to draw comparisons to the best of Restoration drama and to dialogue in the tradition of Oscar Wilde. His unique voice was silenced violently with his untimely death at the hands of his lover who then committed suicide.
