Director's Notes
It's been said that art is timeless and the really great works withstand the test of time. Hopefully, this production of Antigone won't send Sophocles into oblivion. Taking on the task of director and designer is a formidable one, but it allows me as an artist to present a personal vision of an old literary work. Antigone is the fourth project of this nature for me, the others being The Woman Who Fell, An Inspector Calls and Exit the King.
As an Associate Professor of sixteen years at Washburn, I have designed elements for approximately 80 plays. My career spans 26 years and a total of approximately 120 productions. Tragedy and the humn condition have always been my inspiration.

About the Playwrights
Sophocles (c. 496-406)
Greek tragedy as we know it comes to us primarily from the works of three playwrights, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. Sophocles is credited with the authorship of approximately 120 plays of which sevenl survive.

Bertolt Brecht (1891-1956)
The author of Galileo, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Good Woman of Setizuan and The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Bertolt Brecht is probably best known for a sweeping style of theatre performance where narrative and dramatic techniques are mixed and the audience or "spectators" are drawn into an active critical role. The "episodes" in his dramaturgy are separated by songs, captions or narrative passages. Brecht hoped this "alienation" from the performance provoked in the audience thoughtful contemplation and suggested political implications in real world events.

Judith Malina (1926-)
Actress, director, performer who with her husband, Julian Beck (1925-1985), co-founded the Living Theatre in 1946, an influential off broadway performance company. Known especially for touring worldwide with its radical and anarchic political messages, the company flourished in the 1960s and 1970s. After Beck's death, Malina continued the company on a much smaller scale and continues acting in films.
