Advanced Institute on Victim Studies: Critical Analysis of Victim Assistance (formerly known as the Victims Assistance Program

The Critical Analysis of Victim Assistance is a multidisciplinary professional education program that challenges the practitioners to critically reflect on the practices, policies, and societal responses of victim assistance. In addition to greater knowledge regarding research and application, participants will explore the meanings and assumptions that underlie practice and policy thereby gaining greater insights for the development of strategies to effect change. Thus, the program intends not only to increase content knowledge, but to facilitate professional action.

This goal of transformative learning is facilitated by collegial interaction between the faculty and participants. Faculty strive to challenge individual participants while recognizing the expertise of each practitioner and their valuable contribution to the learning event. The small class size and informal interactions in a university environment encourages cooperative learning.

Program Structure

The program offers a two-phased learning event. The first part of the program is an intensive three-day classroom interaction. The focus of this phase is instruction, discussion, critical reflection, and change strategies related to issues considered essential for professional understanding in the field. This includes an understanding of theory and research and its implications on practice and policy as it relates to the societal and professional considerations of crime victimization. A precourse questionnaire is sent to registrants to assist faculty in tayloring content to identified needs.

The second phase of the program is optional for those who wish to earn a Professional Certificate in Victim Assistance: Critical Analysis issued by the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies. The learning experience continues in this phase through web-based support and discussion as participants prepare for the professional certificate. This phase of the program lasts approximately five months.

Professional Certificate

The optional Professional Certificate In Victim Assistance: Critical Analysis is awarded by the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies for demonstration of knowledge and further critical analysis professionally presented to the field. As a university-based organization, a certificate of completion issued by the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies offers a credibility and recognition valued by professions. The certificate requirements include course attendance, a comprehensive exam, critical analysis report, and professional presentation.

With the exception of course attendance, all certificate requirements are completed during the second phase of the program. All requirements have minimum standards of acceptance and are subject to review and approval by program faculty.

Materials

The program includes the book, Victim Assistance: Exploring Individual Practice, Organizational Policy, and Societal Responses. This book was prepared by university faculty and other experts specifically for the program. Other learning materials are also included.
