Recycle Program

Shawnee County Recycling Department has 3 large recycling containers on the Washburn campus.  The containers are located on the south side of Henderson, near the loading dock.  Each container is marked for "Cardboard", "Paper" or "Plastic Bottles".

The custodians continue to collect recycled material, so please continue putting your recyclable material in the blue recycling can in your area. If you have large quantities of recyclable material, please submit an I-Service Work Request to schedule a pick up.

We appreciate and wish to thank Washburn faculty, staff and students for your continued help and support of the recycling program.  It is your support that has enabled the recycling program to collect, since August 2000, over 3 million pounds of recycled material.

Recycling Overview

Purpose:  The key for a successful recycling program at Washburn is the participation and support from the administration, faculty, staff and students.  With our dwindling natural resources, landfills and global warming, recycling will benefit everyone in our community with a cleaner environment, a more attractive campus, an economic advantage for the university, and move the campus towards sustainability.

The following paper products may be disposed of in the blue recycling can located in every office and classroom:

  • Colored or white paper
  • Computer printouts
  • Accounting ledgers
  • Time cards
  • Envelopes
  • Folders
  • Pamphlets
  • Brochures
  • Newspapers
  • Junk mail
  • Catalogs
  • Cardboard **
* * Cardboard should be deposited in or near the blue recycling can.
Other Recyclable Material:
  • Plastic pop bottles should be deposited into plastic recycling containers.
  • Phone books go in specified phone book recycling containers (only available during new phone book distribution).
  • Fluorescent lamps are collected and recycled by Facilities Services.
  • Lead acid, alkaline, nickel, and lithium batteries are collected and recycled by Facilities Services.
  • Toner cartridges with return labels in the print cartridge box may be delivered to University Mailing & Printing Services Department (UMAPS) located in Morgan room 113.  UMAPS will then have United Postal Service (UPS) pick them up.
    • Fill out the return label then afix it to the box for the print cartridge being recycled.
    • Either hand deliver or send the box thru campus-mail to UMAPS.
  • Toner cartridges without return labels may be sent to Information Technology Services Department (ITS) at Bennett Computer Center room 104.  When sending print cartridges thru campus-mail, please afix a note to the box to signify it is for the ITS Department to recycle.
Trash Material:
  • Glossy paper such as magazines should go in regular trash cans.
  • Any paper products contacted with food or beverages should go in regular trash cans (ex. empty pizza boxes, fast food wrappers and sacks, etc.).
