Communications Specialist I

Applications are being accepted for a Communications Specialist I position in the University Police Department.  This position reports to the Communications Specialist Supervisor.  Assigned shift and days off are subject to rotation and may vary.  Employment at Washburn University may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of a background check.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Receives telephone calls for assistance and/or emergency police services from persons on the Washburn University Campus; monitors alarm systems in campus buildings, the environmental computer and Emergency Help Phones on campus.  Determines appropriate response(s) based on the scope and urgency of  reported and observed incidents, and summons officer(s) to provide assistance.

Receives and transmits information to and requests from officers in the field via police radio, and retrieves requested information operating the NCIC computer and KCJIS computer to perform record checks, warrant checks, driver's license checks and vehicle registration checks.  Keeps a constant accounting of the location, status and safety of all officers.  Types call information into the CAD computer to establish a record of the daily activities for his/her shift.

Interfaces with the campus community in person to assist with lost and found items and to give information and directions about the campus when requested.  Maintains the key check-out log and the visitor log.

Monitors the closed circuit television cameras and the campus surveillance cameras for suspicious activities and reports such activities to the officers in the field.

Performs other duties as assigned and necessary in support of the Washburn University Police Department.

 
QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:   High school diploma or GED.  Proven ability to multi-task.  Must have passed a hearing test, vision test and a criminal background check prior to hire.

PREFERRED: Experience working in a law enforcement agency and in a communication center.
