Director of Memorial Union/Associate Director

Human Resources seeks candidates for the Director of Memorial Union/Associate Director of Business/Auxiliary Services position in the Memorial Union.  The employee reports to the Director of Business and Auxiliary Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, direct and oversee the operations of Washburn University Memorial Union to ensure services are relevant, facilities are clean and in good repair, equipment is up-to-date and functional, staff serve customers professionally and promptly, operations are financially sound, and activities are compliant with University policies and regulations as well as state laws:

- Develop and recommend policies and procedures for facility use.

- Inspect facilities and equipment and work with the Custodial Supervisor to identify needed repairs and replacements.  Schedule repairs or arrange to obtain replacements according to need and University policy.

- Plan, organize and coordinate special events and entertainment to be staged at Memorial Union to attract students, faculty, staff and public participants and contribute to a positive collegiate atmosphere.

- Network with students, staff and faculty, customers and other stakeholders to obtain feedback about existing services and events or obtain ideas for new services and events that will contribute to continued popularity and demand for facility use.  Attend conferences, network with other professionals, read journals and access professional websites to research and assess industry trends that might enhance programming and service.

Working with the student employment coordinator in Financial Aid, recruit, interview, select, and hire student employees to serve as liaisons between the scheduling office and event contact persons, facilitating communication and enhancing customer service.  Train/direct student employees in providing assistance to Union staff in room set-up, technology troubleshooting and adjustment, light cleaning and general assistance as needed during events.

Direct and supervise a staff of Custodial Workers to clean Memorial Union, Bianchino Pavilion, Carole Chapel and Bradbury Thompson Center facilities, set up rooms for use, and assist with technology set-up and troubleshooting.  Direct and supervise a staff of Event Schedulers to assist customers with room reservations and arrangements for meetings, social events and special events.  Work with Human Resources to recruit, hire and train new staff as needed.  Evaluate employee performance and provide regular feedback to reward good performance or initiate progressive discipline as appropriate.

Review and approve timesheets to ensure accurate and timely payment to employees for time worked.

Compile and analyze data to assess and report financial and service performance of facilities and services as assigned by the Director of Auxiliary Services.  Determine and set prices for facility use and special services to ensure that costs to the University are covered.  Develop and submit budget requests for operational expenses and capital improvements.  Monitor income and expenditures and manage current budgets in a fiscally responsible manner while ensuring timely, economical purchase of supplies and equipment for use in the facility.

Serve as backup to the Director of Business and Auxiliary Services at times when that individual is unavailable or as otherwise needed and requested.

Perform other duties as assigned such as assisting with oversight of the Ichabod Shop, serving on campus committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:  Bachelor's degree.  Event management experience; supervisory experience.

PREFERRED:  Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Hotel and Restaurant Management or related field, or master's degree.  Experience managing a university student union, conference facility, retail store or university bookstore.
