About Bearman

I am a native of London, England, who first came to the United States as a high school student in the mid-1980s. Indeed, it is fair to say that my move from the East End of London to Western Kentucky was a life-changing experience. I graduated from Madisonville North Hopkins High School, obtained a B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Kentucky, B.A. and M.A. degrees in History from Murray State University, and a Ph.D. in American History from Kansas State University.

At Murray State, my major field of study was American History, and my minor field non-Western History. My M.A. thesis, ““The South Carolina of Kentucky”: How Evangelical Religion Influenced The Jackson Purchase Region of Kentucky to Support Secession,” was directed by Dr. Duane Bolin. Professor Robert D. Linder directed my Ph.D. dissertation at Kansas State University, ““The Atlas of Independency”: The Ideas of John Owen (1616-1683) in the North Atlantic Christian World.” While at Kansas State, my major field of study was American History, with special fields in the History of Christianity, Colonial North America, and modern Southern History.

At Washburn University, I teach a variety of courses in American History and in the History of Christianity. I also direct student research projects in these same fields. By following the appropriate links, you can learn more about my courses and some of the interesting work that my students are doing. Indeed, there are many good things happening at Washburn and especially in our History Department, but probably the best thing that occurs here is the way in which students and faculty are able to interact and design research and study projects tailored to the particular interests of our majors.

All historians are by nature creatures of habit, and thus here we see Bearman exiting the Natures Bounty restaurant in Murray, Kentucky, the location in which he ate lunch everyday for two years while working on his M.A. in history at Murray State University. This picture was taken in February 2000, and it is interesting to note that when Bearman relocated to Kansas in August 2000 that the Bounty went out of business--coincidence?
