French 101
Beginning French 1 (FR 101) is the first half of a year-long basic French course that meets four days a week.
Course Goals:
1. Through the study of authentic aural, written, and visual documents in French, students will develop speaking, writing, reading, listening, analytical, and interpretive skills.
2. Students will explore contemporary aspects of French/Francophone cultures as well as historic, literacy, and artistic manifestations. Students will contrast these with similar aspects of their own culture(s).
3. At the end of the semester, students will be able to communicate successfully with native speakers of French about everyday events and share personal information. Students will be prepared for French 102, a course that fulfills the language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences at Washburn University.

French 102

Beginning French 2 (FR 102) is the second half of a year-long basic French course that meets four days a week. FR 102 fulfills the foreign language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree and a a general education requirement in the areas of listening sensitively, speaking clearly, analysis and synthesis of information.
Course Goals:
1. Through the study of authentic aural, written, and visual documents in French, students will develop speaking, writing, reading, listening, analytical, and interpretive skills.
2. Students will explore contemporary aspects of French/Francophone cultures as well as historic, literacy, and artistic manifestations. Students will contrast these with similar aspects of their own culture(s).
3. At the end of the semester, students who work and study diligently will be able to converse, read, and understand short articles in basic French. Students will have fulfilled the language requirement at Washburn University and will be prepared for intermediate French.

French 201
Intermediate French (FR 201) is a comprehensive review of French grammar that meets three hours a week. FR 201 fulfills the language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences at Washburn University.
Course Goals:
1. The course stresses grammatical accuracy, clarity, and the appropriate use of idiom and syntax in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. As such, the course objective is to increase each student's competence in the four skills through written and oral exercises that foccus on grammar and vocabulary
2. By the end of the semester, students who have applied themselves and worked diligently will not only have a good command of French grammar, but will also be able to express, read, or listen and comprehend, with the aid of a dictionary or auditory prompts.

Exercises in the text and workbook provide a means for students to practice grammatical constructs, develop reading, writing and aural skills and to increase their ability to analyze, synthesize and to apply grammatical concepts and structures. A CD program accompanies a number of the workbook assignments and is available with Dr. Sullivan for the use in the language computer lab. In addition, the professor will refer to a first-year grammar on-line (Française interactif) for supplemental activities and to aid in mastering the material. Assignments from the textbook and workbook comprise the basis for class work and preparation. Supplemental exercises and assignments will be given to reinforce specific areas of study.
