French 202
Intermediate French 2 (FR 202) provides a review and expansion of French study focusing on grammar with a concurrent emphasis on the development of reading, aural comprehension, writing and oral expression. Assignments from the textbook and workbook comprise the basis for class work and preparation. Supplemental exercises and assignments will be given to reinforce specific areas of study. The first five chapters of the text are covered in French 201, Intermediate French 1, and the remaining five chapters comprise the basis for French 202. While the first five chapters of the book emphasize conjugations of regular and irregular verbs in the present, past, and imperfect tenses, the last five chapters introduce the subjunctive mood, the future and conditional tenses, as well as interrogative adverbs and pronouns (interrogative, object, disjunctive, possessive and demonstrative).
Course Goals:
1) Discuss, in French, materials covered in class assignments and to read, synthesize and relate materials of like difficulty.
2) Write French language, compositions with increasing grammatical accuracy, incorporating vocabulary and idiomatic expressions as well as particular grammatical structures.
3) Read or listen and comprehend, with the aid of a dictionary or auditory prompts, standard French in current usage.
4) Explain orally in French of reasonable, comprehensable accuracy an assigned topic to other members of the class.
5) Expand and utilize understandings of grammatical and syntactical structures in the French language and apply the concepts to written and spoken French.

French 207
French 207 is an intermediate French conversation course that meets three hours a week
Course Goals:
1) Students will increase and improve their competence in speaking and listening through the study of newspapers, magazines, contemporary films, documentaries and television commercials. Students will expand their vocabulary by working through exercises on both practical and idiomatci expressions as outlined in the textbook for the course.
2) Students will explore contemporary aspects of French/Francophone cultures as well as French historic literary, and artistic manifestations. Students will contrast these with similar aspects of their own culture.
3) At the end of the semester, students will be able to understand oral French and communicate successfully with native speakers of French in quotidian exchanges.

French 211
French 211 is a comprehensive review of French grammar that meets three hours a week. As a general education course, French 211 will emphasize skills in the areas of speaking clearly, listening sensitively, reading intelligently, writing effectively, interpreting and assessing human values, processing information both in terms of synthesis and analysis, and conceptual thinking. These skills will be assessed on each of the course exams. Course required for French majors and minors.
Course Goals:
1) The course stresses grammatical accuracy, clarity, and the appropriate use of idiom and syntax in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. As such, the course objective is to increase each student's competence in the four skills through written and oral exercises that focus on grammar and vocabulary.
2) By the end of the semester, students who have applied themselves and worked diligently will not only have a good command of French grammar, but will also be able to express themselves orally and in writing in French. In addition, they will also be able to read brief literary text, articles, and other publications in French.

French 212 - French Composition
French 212 is the composition course that directly follows the French 211 class taught in the Fall semester. While we will continue the grammar review we started in French 211, the main focus of this class is writing. the course focuses on the writing process which entails thinking, planning, revising and editing. In this class, you will practice and perfect the writing skills by aquiring basic tools. You will learn new vocabulary and you will review and refine, as needed, basic grammatical structures. Apart from the various exercises and written assignments that will be expected of you, you will also be required to keep a journal to fine tune your writing skills.

FR 399/HN 201 - Coming of Age in the Francophone World
"Coming of the Age in the Francophone World" will explore depictions of adoloscence around the globe in Francophone literature and film. The pains and joys of coming of age are universal - for growing up is a phenomenon to which every student can relate. Using coming of age as a common denominator, we will explore the diverse cultures of Cameroon, Canada, Indochina, North Africa, Martinique, Senegal, and Guinea through selections from texts and films. The course is taught in English and the films will be screened in French with English subtitles. French majors may opt to do the course in French with supplemental French discussions outside the classroom.
