Curtis Vellenga

Curtis Vellenga holds a Bachelor’s degree in Horn Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and a Master’s Degree in Horn from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.  His teachers have included Thomas Gilkey, Nancy Cochran, Andrew Parks, Johnny Woody, David Watkins, Elizabeth Freimuth, Hunter Scholar, Michael Thornton, and James Wehrman. 

      Mr. Vellenga currently holds Principal Horn positions with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, Kansas City Civic Opera Theater, Kansas City Puccini Festival, and Kansas City Brass Project.  He performs frequently with the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, Kansas City Lyric Opera, and freelances extensively in the Kansas City Metro Area.  He is also a regular member of the horn section of the Colorado Mahler Fest.  In addition to his Horn duties, Mr. Vellenga is also an accomplished percussionist, and performs in many groups in styles ranging from rock and metal, to jazz and blues.  He also performs on percussion with several area orchestras, opera companies, and musical theaters. 

      Mr. Vellenga also maintains a private horn studio of about 30 horn students and about 15 percussion students in Kansas City.  His students have won the highest honors awarded in their states, and consistently rank among the top students in regional competitions.
