Policies and Procedures Related to Online Education Technical Assistance

All:

Students:

  • The WebTechs will assist students with issues related to WebCT software and online education. This includes:
    • Saving assignments as Rich-Text Format
    • Uploading assignments
    • Technical issues related to WebCT Tools (Discussions, Quizzes, My Grades, etc.)
  • WebTechs will NOT assist with software problems on student PCs or connectivity issues with the student's local Internet service provider. Students are responsible for making sure they have use of a computer with reliable Web access. Frequent problems encountered on personal computers include:
    • Firewalls
    • Ad blockers
    • Adware and Spyware

Students encountering any of these problems should contact their PC manufacturer or a licensed computer technician for assistance.

Faculty:

  • Because of the success of the online education program, an increasing number of faculty use WebCT to provide instruction to students. To ensure that these instructors receive adequate training and technical support, the OETA has established the following priorities and considerations for assisting faculty:
    1. 2+2 PLAN courses as part of the following degree programs: BS in Criminal Justice; BAS in Human Services; BAS in Technology Administration; BIS in Administrative Communication, Communication Management, or Liberal Studies; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN); and Bachelor of Health Science in Health Services Administration and Medical Imaging.
    2. Courses that are part of a complete online certificate or degree program.
    3. Graduate and upper division courses.
    4. Lower division courses.
    5. Web-assisted courses not part of the 2+2 PLAN or online certificate/degree programs.
  • Any faculty wishing to offer online classes must participate in a two-day training class provided by the WebTechs. Those wishing to attend a seminar should fill out an enrollment form: http://www.washburn.edu/its/seminars/webct.html
Announcements of upcoming training sessions are sent at least a month in advance.
  • Faculty members are encouraged to begin creating new online courses at least three months before the start of the semester.
  • WebCT course space for Web-assisted courses must be requested by the instructor each semester using the Course Creation Request form: http://www.washburn.edu/its/docs/forms/webct.html
  • To have pictures scanned and converted to .gif or .jpg images for online courses, faculty should send them to WebTech via intercampus mail. As always, a two-week minimum is required to guarantee inclusion. All images and photographs must include copyright permission.
  • Faculty members are responsible for denying access to students who have dropped or otherwise should no longer have access to a course.
  • WebTechs will NOT assist with software problems on instructors' home PCs or connectivity issues with local Internet service providers. Frequent problems encountered on personal computers include:
    • Firewalls
    • Ad blockers
    • Adware and Spyware

Instructors encountering any of these problems should contact their PC manufacturer or a licensed computer technician for assistance.
