Develop, Preview and Publish a Site

A Web site is a collection of "pages" or files linked together and available on the World Wide Web. The pages contain text, images and links to other pages.

The following steps must be taken before developing a Web site:

Platform Tools
Unix (faculty or accsp2) Text Editors:  pico, nedit 
HTML Converter:  WordPerfect (look for "Save As HTML")
HTML Editors:  Netscape Composer
PC or NT Text Editors:   Notepad, WordPad, TextPad
HTML Converter:  Microsoft Word,  WordPerfect (look for "Save As HTML")
HTML Editors:  Netscape Composer, Hot Metal Pro, Dreamweaver, Front Page, etc.
Mac Text Editor:  SimpleText, BBEdit 
HTML Converter:  Microsoft Word,  WordPerfect (look for "Save As HTML")
HTML Editor: Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive, PageMill 

Images

There are image archives on the Internet. Some are free and others charge a subscription fee. See Graphics Resources, but pay attention to copyright issues referenced on the Web sites that offer the free graphics. Washburn University doesn't endorse any external links.

Scanned images may be saved and converted to .gif or .jpg format.  There is a scanner available to students/faculty/staff in Bennett 108.

Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop may be used to create graphics or logos.

Publishing the Site to the Web

  1. You transfer your Web site files to webdev.washburn.edu, after authenticating yourself using the assigned Web Authoring Account information. (See Web Publishing: Tips, Tricks and Tools)
HTML files stored locally on: Transfer to development Web server, webdev.washburn.edu:
faculty or accsp2 Files must be transferred to an NT server or PC that has a Secure FTP client such as Secure FX or Core FTP. Our Web server is configured to only allow secure FTP connections.

PC Core FTP, WS-FTP Pro 8.0 (or higher)(PC)
Transmit (Macintosh)
  1. The Webmaster reviews your Web site for compliance with Requirements for Construction of Official Washburn University Web Sites and Accessibility and Quality Checklist. If necessary, corresponds with you about your site.
  2. The Webmaster transfers your site to the production Web server, www.washburn.edu .
  3. Future editing of the site is done by transferring your HTML files and graphics files to your assigned directory on www.washburn.edu .
