Guidelines for creating word
processing documents that will also be converted to HTML for publishing on the
Web:
DOs:
- Do use Tables when you need to line anything up in
columns. Use formatting feature of tables to line up decimal points.
- Do use the Outline feature of your word processor to
create indented lists; they will be converted nicely to lists in HTML. (In
Word, this is found under Format, Bullets and Numbering; in WordPerfect, under
Tools.)
- Do use features supported by HTML:
- Bolding, Italicizing
- Centering **
- Fonts *
- Styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.)
- Tables
- Superscripts,
Subscripts
- Bookmarks
- Colored
Text
- Horizontal Lines
- Hypertext Links
- Images
- Bullets and numbered lists *
- Outline tool
- Table of Contents
- Do use the ability of your word processor to save
files to HTML.
- Always save your HTML document with a suffix of
.html, keeping original document intact.
- Do use the web editor of your word processor to
change from default background color of gray to a background color of white.
- Do view the resultant HTML document in as many web
browsers as possible.
Do NOTs:
- Do not use the Columns feature; use Tables instead
- Do not use tabs and indents to make lists; tabs and
indents can be ignored when converting to HTML. Use the Outline feature of your
word processor instead.
- Avoid using Underlining; when documents are converted
to HTML, underlining often represents hypertext links. Users will try to click
on your underlined text to no avail.
- When naming your HTML documents, do NOT use spaces in
your filenames. Do NOT use special characters (other than dashes or
underscores) in your filenames.
- Avoid using the following features, as they are not
supported by HTML:
- Drop Caps
- Fill (shading)
- Footnotes
- Headers and Footers
- Full Justification
- Margins (left or right)
- Page Numbering
- Tabs and indents
- Vertical Lines
- Watermarks
- Columns
In WordPerfect:
- The text in the Descriptive Name field found under
File, Properties, will be used as the Title when converting to
HTML.
- To create a hyperlink in WordPerfect, highlight the
text to be hyperlinked and choose Hyperlink form the Tools pull-down menu. Key
in a URL in the document area and press OK (or Browse Web, if this option is
available).
- To save a file in HTML format, choose Internet
Publisher from the File pull down menu. After doing so you have two choices:
- Format as Web Document (which formats the current
document as a Web document; a special web toolbar appears.) Note: formatting as
a web document deletes WordPerfect codes that do not have a web
counterpart!
- Publish to HTML (which converts the file to HTML
and asks you to name it)
In Word:
- The text in the Title Field under File, Properties,
will be used as the Title when converting to HTML.
- To create a hyperlink in Word, highlight the text to
be hyperlinked and choose Hyperlink from the Insert pull-down menu. Key in a
URL in the "Type the file or Web Page Name" or browse for the web
page.
- To save a file in HTML format, choose Save as Web
Page from the File pull-down menu.
