Six Traits of Writing Resources

What is Six Trait Writing and Teaching?

The Six Trait Model uses elements of composition: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions to compose, teach and assess writing. Because writing is an art form, it is often difficult to articulate why writing is ‘good’ and what made it so. The Six Trait Model articulates for the student, characteristics of writing which can be studied, communicated, evaluated and developed. Created in Beaverton, Oregon in 1984 by a team of teachers led by Vicki Spandel, the ‘6+1 Trait® Writing Assessment and Instruction Model’ is copyrighted by the Northwest Regional Education Laboratory. Other Six Trait curriculum guides and resources are created by various publishers and educators.

Which Six Traits resources are available at the Curriculum Resources Center?

The CRC received and Interlibrary Loan Development Program grant in 2005 from the state of Kansas to procure Six Traits teaching materials. The items are available at the CRC to WU students and faculty, Kansas residents, or through participating interlibrary loan libraries.
