Description: Free version of the subscription (fee-based) WorldCat database. Serious scholarly research should be performed on the subscription database. However, WorldCat.org offers a reasonably powerful, more user-friendly interface and easier navigation. Detailed comparisons of the free and subscription versions are beyond the scope of this document. However, WorldCat.org features like relevance ranking, library holdings listed by geographical proximity to the patron, and the grouping of different versions of the same work under a single master record will benefit most users wishing to simply identify materials of interest or verify details about a particular item. One can also read and add personal ratings and reviews of items. Unlike the subscription WorldCat database, WorldCat.org also contains journal article records from four of OCLC's FirstSearch databases: GPO Monthly Catalog (Federal government journals), ArticleFirst, MEDLINE, and ERIC.
