Ichabod Shop & Mabee Library bring you the "Junk to Funk" Earth Day Events Tuesday, April 23, 2013 (and continuing through April 30th).

In addition to focusing on the importance of recycling, "Junk to Funk" is another way of showcasing the campus' work and creative leadership in getting the word out to the community on the importance of environmental stewardship.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 entrants in each category. Prizes provided by the Ichabod Shop and Mabee Library.

"Junk to Funk" is open to all faculty, staff and students of Washburn University and Washburn Tech. We will have three fun categories that that you can enter your upcycled creations. All creations must contain 51 % recycled materials:

Trashion Show
2:00 pm   Memorial Union Food Court Stage
May or may not be limited to clothing made from recycled items or upcycled from existing clothing. Judging criteria—stylishness, imagination, fit/color/overall appearance, & audience approval.

Entrants will model or provide a model for their creations. Pieces must be durable for wear in a fashion show. Entrants are encouraged to design & create apparel made completely from recyclable or other material that would have been otherwise sent to a landfill.

Outfit must consist of 51% second hand clothing. May be altered with new or second hand items such as buttons, appliques, embroidery and similar ornamentation. Clothing may also incorporate household or office items that might otherwise be thrown away.

UpCycled Art
Must contain at least 51% post-consumer recycled material. Post-consumer recycled material is defined as material that has been previously used by a consumer and is being recycled into the art object for the contest. More than one post-consumer recycled material can be used in the art object submitted for the contest.

Students must use materials that would have otherwise been sent to the landfill. (NO PERISHABLE ITEMS) Suggested materials metal, paper, rubber, plastic, cloth, glass, etc.

Non-recyclable fasteners such as glue and tape are permitted. Please make sure all items are stable. Size is limited to what can fit in through the front doors of Mabee Library.

Anything Goes (Reusable Item)
May include but not limited to handbags, wallets, rugs, housewares, quilts, tools, jewelry, etc. and must be made with 51% recycled materials.

Items in this category should have a purpose or function so that it can be used over and over again.

Winners of all three categories will be announced at the conclusion of the Trashion Show in the Memorial Union Food Court Stage at 2:00 p.m. on April 23, 2013. All submissions for UpCycled Art & Anything Goes categories must be turned in at Mabee Library no later than 9:00 a.m. April 23, 2013. These items will be displayed and judged in Mabee Library and will be on display through April 30th.
