in the incorporation of Lincoln College

The purpose of founding an institution of learning of a high literary and religious character early took possession of the minds of the people of Kansas. The project first came up for general discussion in 1857, at which time measures were adopted to secure a fitting location for such an enterprise. Unforeseen difficulties, however, attended the settlement of the Territory and the formation of a State Government. Repeated hostile invasions, the hardships of the year of famine, and the tumult arising from the war, compelled the suspension, for a time, of all active effort for the establishment of the College. On the return of Peace the interest hitherto manifested took a tangible form, and on the sixth of February, 1865, an act of incorporation was secured under the name of "Lincoln College."
