Dr. Xiao-Li Ding
Dr. Xiaoli (Shiao-Li) Ding, Professor of Piano, has been on
the faculty of Washburn University since 1992 where she teaches applied piano,
Group Piano, Computers and Music, and Introduction to World Music.
As a performer, Dr. Ding has given many solo performances, lecture-recitals and presentations at national and international conferences in Berlin, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Stavanger, Norway, Bangkok, Thailand; Kula Lumpur and Johor Bahru, Malaysia; Singapore; and Tianjin and Beijing of her native county China. She commissioned and premiered a group of piano etude by Unsuk Chin. In the United States, she was a member of the Kansas Arts Commission’s Touring Performing Arts Roster for six years and has given solo performances in Colby, Manhattan, Midland, Emporia of Kansas, Ann Arbor and Midland of Michigan, Indianapolis and Bloomington of Indiana; Batavia and Rock Island of Illinois, Boston, Amherst, Worcester of Massachusetts; Burlington of Vermont; and many other places. Before came to Kansas, she performed chamber music with various contemporary music organizations and ensembles in Boston and New England areas.
Dr. Ding’s research interests include historic recordings of Sergei Rachmaninoff, piano works of contemporary Chinese composers, development in piano publication and piano productions in China, and comparative studies of piano pedagogy. Her articles have published in Clavier as well as in Chinese publications such as Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music and Piano Artistry.
Dr. Ding has been active in local and statewide music organizations. She served as an advisor to the Kansas Arts Commission in various capacities, and was the Vice President of Kansas Music Teachers Association and is the Chair of KMTA Collegiate Competitions. She was the first chairperson of the Latch-Keyboard Project’s Advisory Committee, a project provides keyboard instruction by professional music teachers at no cost for students who are from underserved families.
Dr. Ding received her undergraduate degree from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China; a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan; and a doctoral degree in piano performance from Boston University.
