What is Federal Work Study?

Federal Work-Study is a student financial aid program for eligible undergraduate students with unmet financial need.

How do I apply for Federal Work Study?

When filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), answer yes to the question, "In addition to grants, are you interested in "work-study" (which you earn through work)?"

Where can I find out if I have been awarded a Work Study award?

You will find your Work Study award on your award letter. Your award letter is mailed to you or you can review your award letter by logging in to MyWashburn Self-Service.

I wasn't awarded Work Study. Can I still work on campus?

Yes. Washburn University has campus based jobs through different departments. Please check with the Student Employment Coordinator, Jamie McEwen, in the Financial Office to see what is available.

Where will I work?

Washburn University has student employees in almost every department on campus, as well as community service jobs off campus.

What is the maximum amount awarded for Work Study?

The maximum amount awarded, and the maximum amount a student can earn, for the 2008-2009 academic year is $3250, or $1625 per semester.

What is the pay rate for student employment?

The starting pay rate for student employees is $6.55 per hour (effective July 1, 2008). If you have been employed in the same department for a year, you will be eligible for a pay raise of $0.25 per hour. Each additional year, you will be eligible for a $0.25 per hour raise.

How do I get paid?

You will submit the hours you have worked online at MyWashburn, under Self Service Quick Links menu. Hours are to be submitted bi-weekly, and you must have your hours submitted by 5:00 P.M. on the Monday following the end of the pay period. Federal and State income taxes will be with-held. You may have your paycheck direct deposited by notifying the Business Office.
