Leadership Student of the Month - August 2009
Caley Onek
As an active member of the Washburn University Leadership Institute, Caley Onek is a true example of student leadership. From her first day on campus, Onek has pursued extra-curricular activities with extreme determination. One of the first organizations Onek was involved with began as a freshman scholarship recipient for the Leadership Institute. Currently, she is also an active member in the Future Alumni Network, Bod Squad, Christian Challenge, Campus Activities Board, Summer Orientation Counselors and Big Brothers Big Sisters. But her most prestigious feat this far may be her victory in the campaign for Vice President of the Washburn University Student Government Association for the 2009-2010 school year.
As Vice President of WSGA, Onek and her campaign partner President Garrett Love have pledged to make improvements and initiate change according to the wants and needs of the students. Because WSGA represents the students and all student organizations at Washburn, Onek takes this role seriously as a firm believer that every student has a voice that deserves to be heard.
Onek’s leadership responsibilities as Vice President include heading the Homecoming committee and creating the new planners given out to students in the fall. She is also responsible for acting as the president’s substitute if he is absent for an extended period of time.
Onek plans to be involved in the PALS program this year and is eager to share her memories of the Institute with new members.
“I remember the heated discussions in LE 100 that I excluded myself from at the beginning of the semester, and was instigating by the end of it!” said Onek. “I have learned so much from the Institute. It truly is amazing.”
Onek is a junior Business marketing and sports management major.
