Leadership Student of the Month - February 2010
Nicole Stejskal
Junior Nicole Stejskal is used to having her name in print...at least as a by-line. As a Mass Media major and the current Executive Editor of the Washburn Review, Stejskal has demonstrated exemplary leadership during her college career and has been selected as the February Leadership Student of the Month.
Stejskal got her start in the LI before her freshman year even began. "It was an opportunity that I heard of before I even stepped onto campus," Stejskal said. "I had taken a lot of leadership roles in high school, but hadn't really found the opportunity to keep going with that at Washburn yet."
Stejskal said that the study of leadership has helped to build her confidence in her leadership ability. Involvement in the Institute has also allowed her to become more self-aware and encouraged her to focus on improving her leadership style to make it as effective as possible.
But perhaps most importantly, Stejskal has had the opportunity to play an integral role in the process of change. As a member of last year's student advisory council, Stejskal was on the team of students focusing on re-vamping the structure of the Leadership Institute. Class project opportunities, like this year's Multiple Sclerosis awareness project in LE 300, have allowed her the chance to be both an initiator and spectator of necessary change.
"One of the best parts has been being able to aid a change and to see that change really happen," Stejskal said.
