Community Service Transformational Experience (CSTE)

Community Service Transformational ExperiencePurpose:  Students who have engaged with faculty members and other students in significant, meaningful community service, and who have been guided to reflect on the power and purpose of these experiences, graduate from the University as citizens who are not resigned to accepting the community as it is but have a vision for how they can help make the community better.

Student reflection of the WTE

Alisiha AdamsAlisha Adams, human services alumna, developed a community food pantry while a student at Washburn, which is now called the East Topeka Hunger Project.

“Sometimes service makes me feel guilty or sad about my life and community. It can be depressing to realize how much poverty and evil exists in the area. I think I’ve enjoyed all of the dissonance, thinking that bad things don’t really happen to good people or that really bad things don’t happen in my area. On the reverse, these awakening experiences have strengthened my desire to fight for social justice and work as an advocate for justice and peace."
