The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) in the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $420,000 EU-U.S. Atlantis grant to Washburn University School of Nursing. The funds will be used for student and faculty exchanges with EU partners Mikkeli University of Applied Studies in Savonlinna, Finland, Queen's University Belfast, N. Ireland and the University of Szeged, Hungary.
Purposes of the project are as follows:
- Preparing nursing students for universal practice in the EU and U.S. through learning language, culture-specific education, professional and clinical education.
- Understanding current and future trends to globalize nursing education and nursing care.
- Implementing and evaluating an accredited undergraduate double degree program between Washburn and three EU partners.
- Disseminating evaluation of TADD experiences through professional publications and a final conference.
During the project period 24 students from the EU will study abroad for one academic year at Washburn and one academic semester in one of the EU partner institutions. Twenty-four students from Washburn will spend similar time periods in two of the EU institutions. Faculty will also participate in two-week teaching exchanges during the grant period.
The TADD project activities begin June 2010 and end in 2014.
