Internet Safety
Everyone has a computer; in fact many homes have more than one. Computers allow us to shop from home, research information and talk to people from around the world. The internet is a powerful tool in today's society but it is not always used with the best of intentions. There are individuals who will use the internet to steal someone's identity or lure someone away with the intent to harm them.
You can take steps to help prevent this from happening.
- Don't' share passwords with anyone and change them often
- Don't open any attachments that haven't been run through an antivirus program
- Log off the computer when you are done
- Don't reply to SPAM
- Keep personal information personal
- Delete all emails, unread from people you don't know
- Never leave the public area of a chat room
- Never get together with someone you 'meet' online
- Don't give out bank information or credit card information unless you initiate the transaction
- Report suspicious activity or emails to your internet provider or police
Remember you may not know who you are talking to while on the computer. The person may not be who they claim to be. By being smart and using common sense the internet can be a useful tool.
