Information for Faculty
ISS provides a wide variety of services for faculty. Our goals are to ensure faculty success in the classroom, online, and in every other way. We strive to ensure faculty members can perform simple tasks such as writing e-mail to more advanced activities, such as using video and audio for online or on campus instruction. ISS aims to collaborate with faculty to ensure the overall success of the students we serve.
Mediated Classrooms
A mediated classroom at Washburn means that the classroom space has a computer, projector, and screen to use. All classroom spaces at Washburn are mediated. As an option, a VGA port is available to plug in a laptop computer for those faculty that prefer to use their own equipment. A mediated classroom provides the opportunity to enrich the traditional class with audio, video, PowerPoint, and other interactive media not traditionally associated with an on campus course. By mediating the classroom, students can learn in various learning styles, which enriches their lives. ISS hopes that by enabling instructors to use technology in the classroom, the overall quality of education increases student success. More information...

Using on campus computers
Most Washburn faculty members will have a Dell desktop computer in their office for use. Upon turning the computer on, a login screen appears. This login is necessary to enable central storage of files and preferences for every faculty member regardless of the computer they use. No more does the instructor have to copy files on to disk or other removable media when going to a mediated classroom to teach a course. ISS has implemented WUAD (Washburn University Active Directory). This technology stores bookmarks, preferences, desktop icons and shortcuts, as well as mail settings for local mail programs and any other number of customizations. Everything is stored in the active directory so when logging into another computer in WUAD, it appears as if the instructor never left the office computer. Another important aspect to this is central file storage. Faculty have a MyDocuments folder for document storage . Unlike simply saving to the C drive of the local computer, documents saved in MyDocuments are backed up and kept safe. Faculty members also have access to departmental shared drives. Additional shared drives are set up when sharing files among a group of people is desired.
Information About Accounts
Two types of user names and passwords exist at Washburn. The most common user name and password is the MyWashburn login information. MyWashburn gives faculty members access to advise students, check e-mail, teach online or hybrid classes, submit grades, and many other things. This user name is typically first name.last name. Another type of account is referred to as the WUAD account. This user name is typically part of the last name and first name or the last name with numbers attached to the end. This login information is to access on-campus computers. Questions about accounts can be addressed at the Technology Support Center (Bennett Room 104) or by e-mailing support@washburn.edu
Using Online Resources
There are three main ways an instructor can use online resources to enhance or instruct a course. These three methods are fully detailed in The Three Ws: WebCT, the World Wide Web, and Washburn University. The method used largely depends on what the instructor wants to accomplish and how sensitive the information is. The Internet is a wealth of knowledge, but not all faculty members are prepared to spread that knowledge among the entire world. If however, faculty members are interested in having a web site at Washburn, every faculty member can set up web space to publish content to the web. MyWashburn also provides an avenue for sharing online content called MyWashburn Course Homepages. MyWashburn Course Homepages provides a password protected environment to send e-mail, announcements, or share files with students. The final option is to make use of Washburn's Course Management System (WebCT). WebCT is used by instructors to deliver online courses and also by instructors wanting to mix online and on campus course components. The tools provided by MyWashburn Course Homepages and WebCT are similar, but WebCT adds the ability to provide assignments and tests/quizzes to students for the purposes of evaluation. More information can be found in the MyCourses tab of MyWashburn. Questions specific to online education can be sent to webtech@washburn.edu
