The Mulvane Art Museum is dedicated to providing art education and art resources to Topeka and surrounding areas. The Mulvane Education Department provides numerous options for all ages, including in-house and outreach programming. The Mulvane Art Museum cooperates with the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency; the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; the City of Topeka, ArtsConnect, local school districts, area agencies, businesses and private donors to offer citywide Art Resources for Topeka (A.R.T.) education programs.
The Mulvane Art Museum ArtLab, Look, Create, Understand, is a hands-on art experience center for people of all ages. The ArtLab is made possible by funding from the Sabitini Family Foundation.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University is to provide members of the Washburn community, Topeka residents and visitors to the capital district of Kansas an area in which they can learn to think independently and critically about art, to appreciate art as a vehicle for communicating human values, and to value the diversity of human creativity. With almost 3000 objects in its permanent collection, a schedule of changing exhibitions and numerous public programs, Mulvane Art Museum has something for everyone. Founded in 1922, Mulvane Art Museum is Kansas’ oldest art museum. The museum is located on the Washburn University campus in Topeka. Admission is free.
Location/Finding Us
The Mulvane Art Museum is located on the north end of the Washburn University campus, at the corner of 17th and Jewell streets, and immediately south of the White Concert Hall. Interstate travelers should take one of the 1-70 or 1-470 exits for Washburn University, following the signs to the campus. 17th street runs east and west along the north boundary of the school. There is a parking lot complex west of the Mulvane. See map.
The Museum
The Mulvane Art Museum facilities feature over 5,000 square feet of exhibition space on two floors, and the ArtLab, an educational facility that includes a resource library and four art classrooms.
Permanent Collection
The Mulvane’s permanent collection is richly diverse and includes paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture, photographs, and decorative arts by internationally known artists, as well as local and regional artists.
