Dr. Ivalah Allen Voice Office: Garvey Fine Arts 317 785.670.3292

Ivalah Allen is a performer, conductor, director, coach and teacher. Since arriving at Washburn University in January, 1997, her classroom duties have included vocal diction, vocal literature and music history. In the voice studio, Dr. Allen teaches vocal pedagogy, oratorio, art song literature in multiple languages and coaches opera. Additionally, Dr. Allen aids in preperation for competitions and festival activities as well as advising students in their degree programs. To date, Dr. Allen has directed Gallantry (Moore), Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein), Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss), Die Zauberflotte (Mozart), Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart), a musical review of Rogers and Hammerstein, A Grand Night For Singing, and scenes from Falstaff (Verdi). Currently, Dr. Allen is working on The Mikado (Gilbert and Sullivan), which is scheduled for production in April of 2010. Allen is a 2009 recipient of the Ned N. Fleming Award for Excellence in Teaching. As a performer, Dr. Allen enjoys an active schedule singing throughout the Midwest in recital, symphonic, operatic, and oratorio appearances. Recent performances include solo soprano in Requiems by Brahms, Faure, Mozart, and Rutter. Dr. Allen has also been featured in works such as the Messiah (Handel), St. Matthew Passion (J.S. Bach), Lord Nelson Mass (Haydn), Carmina Burana (Orf), Gloria (Rutter), Elijah (Mendelssohn), Exsultate, Jubilate (Mozart), Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (Barber), Wessendonck Lieder (Wagner), and the lead role in Suor Angelica (Puccini). During the 2009-2010 academic year, Dr. Allen will be performing Requiem (Faure), Gloria (Poulenc) and works by Richard Pearson Thomas, Handel, Schubert, Liszt, Satie, Hundley, and Faith in recitals. Dr. Allen serves as the President of the Kansas Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in vocal performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and her Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from Wichita State University. Dr. Allen has also served on the faculties at the University of Wisconsin and Friends University.
