“Ourense:Thermal Capital,” will be discussed by
Miguel Gonzalez-Abellas, professor, modern languages, at the Brown Bag
International Lecture at noon, Wednesday, March 7 at the International House,
Washburn University. The event is open to the public.
Located in Galicia, in Northwestern Spain, the city of Ourense is one of the
most isolated and poor cities in Spain. However, Ourense is recently
re-branding itself as the “thermal capital” of Spain, and has begun to
seriously explore its underground thermal waters to build resorts, spas, pools,
and other attractions in a serious attempt to bring tourists and money to town.
This presentation explores the changes that have occurred in the city during
the first decade of the 21st Century and the problems still facing the city.
