Artists interested in detailing the scenes and
colors of the Washburn University campus are invited to participate in the
inaugural Art en Plein Aire on Saturday, April 21. The event is open to artists
from high school age through adult.
Plein aire is a French expression which means "in the open air.” This type
of competition challenges artists to focus their efforts on the varied
elements, such as sights and sound and temperature and weather, and capture the
landscape in drawings or paint.
Artworks will be featured in a special art auction and social event on Nov. 17
at the university. Proceeds from the auction will support a permanent
commissioned art piece to recognize the Washburn sesquicentennial celebration.
Artists may also submit one work created at the Plein Aire event for exhibition
at the Mulvane Art Museum Sept. 7 through Nov. 17, 2012.
Registration is $25 per person, or $10 for students. The deadline for entries
is April 1. For complete registration information, go to
www.washburn.edu/paintwashburn. The rain date is April 28. This event is not
recommended for children.
Art in Plein Aire is one of several special events scheduled in anticipation of
Washburn University’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2015. For more
