Forty-eight top students from six area high schools competed and enjoyed a variety of events at the 2012 Chemistry Day staged recently at Washburn University.
Students competed in an examination prepared from the American Chemical Society National Test Bank and in The Chemathon, the Chemistry Quiz Bowl. Washburn students also demonstrated various scientific instruments used in chemical analysis.
Top performers in the ACS examination were:
First place: Gabe Bergman, Concordia High
Second place: Andrew Doyle, Hayden High
Third place: Emmanuel Opoku, Highland Park High
Fourth place: Austin Krug, Topeka West High
Fifth place: Cody Schmitz, Concordia High and Matt Rogers, Topeka West High (tie)
The team representing Concordia High won first and second place awards in the chemistry quiz bowl, Chemathon. Third place honors went to the team from Hayden High and the Topeka West High team placed fifth.
